Published by Aman Iman Publishing in 2015, Dirección Prohibida presents a series of black-and-white photographs taken by Spanish photographer Joaquín Collado in 1972 in the Barrio Chino district of Valencia. The photographs document the streets and inhabitants of this once notorious neighbourhood, capturing its nightlife, sex workers, street vendors and everyday urban life during the final years of Francoist Spain.
With a direct documentary approach, Collado offers an intimate portrait of a hidden side of the city, combining social observation with a distinctive humanistic perspective. Accompanied by a text by Armand Llàcer, the book preserves a fragment of Valencia’s urban history through photographs that explore the relationship between public space, sexuality and everyday life.
